## The short answer

Your Bitmoji only moves when you open Snapchat, never in the background. The timestamp shows when someone last had the app open, not when they arrived. A stale pin usually means a closed app.

## Key takeaways

- Your position updates when you open the app. Closing it stops the updates, but the last position lingers for hours.
- “Last active” measures app usage, not physical arrival or departure.
- Accuracy comes from your phone's GPS, so it is street-level outdoors and can be badly wrong indoors.
- A friend appearing at an odd location is far more often a stale update than anything else.

## The single most misread thing on the Map

The Map is the feature that starts arguments, because it looks like a live tracker. It is not. It is a cache of the last position each of your friends reported, and a friend only reports one when they open Snapchat. Everything confusing about the Map follows from that single fact.

Someone whose Bitmoji sits at a restaurant for four hours has not necessarily been there for four hours. They opened Snapchat at that restaurant, then stopped opening it. The pin is a fossil, not a feed.

> **The rule to remember**
> Position updates on app open. Nothing updates in the background. A pin that has not moved means the app has not been opened, not that the person has not moved.

## When your Bitmoji actually updates

*What triggers a Snap Map position update*

| Action | Updates your position? |
| --- | --- |
| Opening Snapchat | Yes |
| Sending a snap or chat | Yes |
| Snapchat running in the background | No |
| Receiving a notification without opening it | No |
| Phone locked with Snapchat closed | No |
| Ghost Mode on | No — you are removed from the Map entirely |

**The life of a single position report**

| Item | Value | Note |
| --- | --- | --- |
| You open Snapchat | 00h | Position is reported and your Bitmoji moves |
| You close the app | 1+0h | No further updates are sent |
| Friends still see the old pin | 20–8h | The last position stays on their Map |
| Bitmoji drops off the Map | 3~8h | You disappear until you open the app again |

*Approximate behaviour. Exact durations vary by app version and how the app was closed.*

## What “last active” measures

Tap a friend's Bitmoji and you get a timestamp. It is easy to read this as "they have been at this place since then." It is not that. It is the moment their app last checked in, which happens to be the moment their position was last recorded.

- "Just now" — they have Snapchat open or have opened it in the last few minutes.
- "2h ago" — they opened the app two hours ago, at that location. Where they are now is unknown.
- No timestamp at all — they are in Ghost Mode or have not shared location with you.

> **Editor's note**
> Because the timestamp tracks app usage rather than movement, it is a poor tool for the thing people most often use it for. It tells you something about someone's phone habits and almost nothing reliable about their whereabouts right now.

## How accurate is the position?

Snapchat uses the location your phone hands it, so accuracy is the phone's accuracy, not Snapchat's. Outdoors with a clear sky, consumer GPS is generally good to within a few metres — enough to identify a building. Indoors, in dense city blocks, or on a phone falling back to Wi-Fi and cell positioning, it can be out by hundreds of metres.

This is why a friend sometimes appears in the shop next door, or on the wrong side of a street. It is not Snapchat being coy; it is ordinary positioning error. If you have turned off Precise Location in your OS settings — described in the location-off guide — the error is deliberate and much larger.

## Who can see you

*Visibility by setting*

| Setting | Who sees your Bitmoji |
| --- | --- |
| Ghost Mode | Nobody |
| My Friends | Everyone you have added mutually |
| My Friends, Except… | Mutual friends minus the people you list |
| Only These Friends… | Only the people you pick |

One-way followers on a Public Profile do not see your location under any of these settings. Location sharing is a mutual-friends feature, which is a useful distinction if you are working out what followers can and cannot see.

## Snaps on the Map are a separate thing

The heat spots and story bubbles scattered across the Map come from people submitting snaps to Our Story. That is a deliberate publishing action, entirely separate from location sharing. You can be in Ghost Mode and still submit to the Map, and doing so attaches a place to the snap for anyone who finds it.

> **Ghost Mode does not cover submitted snaps**
> If you submit a snap to Our Story while in Ghost Mode, the snap is still tied to a location and still publicly viewable. Hiding your Bitmoji does not retroactively hide content you chose to publish.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does Snap Map track me in the background?

No. Your position is reported when you open Snapchat or send something. With the app closed, no new positions are sent, though your last one stays visible to friends for several hours.

### What does the time under someone's Bitmoji mean?

It is when they last had Snapchat open, which is when their position was last recorded. It does not indicate when they arrived at that place or whether they are still there.

### How accurate is Snap Map?

As accurate as your phone's GPS. Outdoors that is usually within a few metres. Indoors or in dense urban areas it can be out by hundreds of metres, and turning off Precise Location makes it deliberately vague.

### Can my followers see me on Snap Map?

No. Location sharing applies only to mutual friends. Followers on a Public Profile never see your Bitmoji, regardless of your Map setting.
