Privacy and location

Pausing or freezing your location, Ghost Mode, how Snap Map works, what is actually encrypted, and turning off My AI.

Location is the setting people most want to control and most often get wrong, because Snapchat offers several things that all look like "off" and only one of them actually stops your phone reporting where you are. The difference between hiding your Bitmoji and revoking the operating system permission matters, and the app does not spell it out.

This section also covers encryption, which is routinely overstated in both directions. Snapchat is neither a fully end-to-end encrypted messenger nor a completely open one, and the precise boundary is worth knowing before you decide what to send.

Common questions about privacy and location

Does Ghost Mode stop Snapchat collecting my location?

No. Ghost Mode hides you from friends on the Map. It does not revoke the app's location permission, and Snapchat may still receive location data for other features.

Can I freeze my location at a fake place?

Not through any supported setting. Ghost Mode hides you; it does not let you choose a false position. Apps that claim otherwise typically require spoofing tools that risk your account.

Are Snapchat messages end-to-end encrypted?

Snaps — the photo and video messages — are. Text chat has historically not carried the same guarantee. The two are treated differently and it is worth checking Snap's current security documentation before assuming.
