Messages and calls

Whether deleted messages can be recovered, unsaving chats, reading a snap without opening it, video calls, and sending money.

Snapchat's messaging model is deliberately unlike every other app: the default is deletion, not retention. That single design decision explains most of the questions in this section — why recovery is usually impossible, why saving a message is an explicit act, and why the read receipt is so hard to dodge.

The pages here are direct about limits. Where something cannot be done, they say so in the first paragraph rather than walking you through five steps that end in nothing. Where a workaround exists but is unreliable, the failure conditions are listed.

Common questions about messages and calls

Can Snapchat recover a message I deleted?

In almost all cases, no. Unsaved messages are removed from Snapchat's servers once opened or once the retention window expires, and there is no user-facing restore.

Do third-party Snapchat recovery apps work?

No. They cannot reach Snapchat's servers, and the data is not on your device to recover. Most exist to harvest logins or subscription payments.

Does the other person know if I save a message?

Yes. Saving a chat message is visible to both sides and the message is shaded to show it has been kept.
