Memories and storage

What the Memories storage change means, how to export everything, what clearing cache really deletes, and why Snapchat eats so much space.

Memories is the part of Snapchat that quietly accumulates years of your photos, and it is also the part that changed most in 2025 and 2026. Storage above a free allowance is now a paid tier, which turned a feature nobody thought about into something worth understanding properly.

This section separates three things people routinely confuse: cache, app data, and Memories themselves. Clearing one of them is harmless housekeeping. Clearing another can cost you content that has no backup. The pages below say exactly which is which, and give you an export route before you touch anything.

Common questions about memories and storage

Will clearing my cache delete my Memories?

No. Cache holds re-downloadable copies of lenses, stickers and recently viewed media. Memories live in your account and are not removed by clearing cache.

Are my Memories backed up if I delete the app?

Memories saved to Snapchat's servers survive deleting the app. Anything saved only to your device does not. The two are not the same thing, and the app does not make that obvious.

How do I get a copy of everything Snapchat holds about me?

Through the My Data export in your account settings. It is requested from the web portal and delivered as a download link, typically within a day.
